Mekia Cox began her life as a performer at the young age of 2 when she performed her first solo song and dance in front of an eager and hopeful audience. The first words out of her mouth after coming off- stage were “I liked it up there”. She knew from then on that her purpose in life was to entertain.
Mekia then spent the next 5 years training with dance teacher Linda Reiger in the U.S. Virgin Islands. At the age of seven, she and her family moved up to Orlando, FL. In 1989 she was asked to be a part of the Christmas Spectacular show at Disney’s Magic Kingdom. Living close to Universal Studios, she also began to appear in numerous Nickelodeon shows like, “My Brother and Me”, “Keenan and Kel”, and “All That”.
She continued her training in dance but also began singing and acting. She attended Dr. Phillips HS where she was accepted into the Visual and Performing Arts magnet program for vocal performance. It was here that she realized that she could combine all three areas of performance, singing, dancing and acting, into one genre – Musical Theater.
In 1999 she was accepted into Florida State University’s Musical Theater program. She spent the next four years training hard and learning to hone her craft. Every summer, if she wasn’t taking classes at school, she was out working as a professional actress. One summer she worked at Heritage Repertory Theater in Charlottesville, VA where she played Brenda in Smokey Joe’s café, and Virtue in Anything Goes. Another summer she was seen as a recurring character in the Nickelodeon show “Noah Knows Best”.
After graduating in 2003 with a Bachelor of Music degree from FSU she starred as Sarah in “Ragtime” the musical at Merry-Go-Round Theater in Auburn, NY. She then went on to tour the nation for two years as Carmen in “Fame” the Musical, and was able to revisit the role of Brenda in “Smokey Joe’s Café”.
At the end of her second year of touring she landed a role on “One Tree Hill” as Faith, the old basketball buddy of Lucas Scott. She then moved to Los Angeles to begin her career in TV and Film. Not long after her arrival she landed a guest star role in “CSI: New York” as Kia Rowe and shortly after that she landed another guest star as Alicia in “Half and Half”. Other guest star roles include Celeste Cutler in “Bones” and Danielle Davis in “Viva Laughlin”.
A pivotal moment in her career came when she was chosen to be one of two lead female dancers to take part in the legendary king of pop Michael Jackson’s come back tour, “This Is It”, as well as its subsequent documentary, where she was seen strutting her stuff across the stage in “The way you make me feel,” a role originated by Tatiana Thumbtzen in the song’s video made in 1987.
More recently, Mekia was cast as Lizzy Gilliam in JJ Abrams hot new spy series “Undercovers.” She has also been seen playing the hip and stylish recurring character Sasha in the CW’s hit series “90210”.
Mekia’s main goal is to entertain audiences by allowing them to take a step out of their own lives and peer into the heart and soul of someone else’s experience. She does this in hopes of giving herself and others a better understanding of themselves as well as the world around them.
